Hard Drive Temps
Hard disk temperature is another thing you should pay attention to on your computer. The hard drive is a piece of hardware that will go out with use and excessive heat can cause extra and unneeded wear and tear. Below we take a look at how to monitor and how to lower hard drive temperatures.
How to Monitor Hard Drive Temperatures
There are many ways to monitor the temperature of your hard drive. Pretty much all of the ways require some type of 3rd party software.
HDDTemp – HDDTemp is a great utility to monitor the temperatures of your hard disks. This software is probably the best software for monitoring hard drive health and temperatures. It should be noted that this software is not free.
Speedfan – You may already have speedfan on your system to monitor CPU temperatures. This utility is also good far monitoring hard drive temps as well. This is a great free alternative to HDDTemp if you are not looking to spend any money.
Lowering Hard Drive Temperatures
There are many things you can do to keep hard drive temperatures low. First, make sure your computer case is clean and free of dust. You want to make sure the fans are especially clean. Next, if you are having temperature problems, you can upgrade your computer case or add fans to your current case for better airflow. One thing you can do for hard drives specifically is to make sure that they have plenty of room around them for airflow. Also, if you are in the market for a new hard drive, the new SSD hard drives stay cooler by design than older hard drives. Older HDDs are extremely susceptible to temperature changes that diminish their lifespan.
When it comes to software, HDDTemp is a good solution. High Disk Drive temperature software is used to prevent failures while working on computers for a longer period of time. This is quite safe and secure. While this stays invisible, HDD works in the background and warns you only when there is a threat to your data or when there is a serious attack on the hard disk.
